What collaborating looks like

Edit shared text files together. Your teammates see your changes as you type.

How it works

01 / Share

Start from a folder you already have.

Choose a local folder, review the files Tether will share, and confirm. Use a .tetherignore file to exclude files you do not want to share.

02 / Invite

Invite your teammates.

Invite teammates by their Tether usernames or share an invitation link. Members can edit shared files; Observers can view them.

03 / Build

Work in your own copy, in sync.

Each person gets the files on their own computer. Edits, new files, renames and deletions stay in sync while you're connected.

In the extension today

Everything happens
in your editor.

  • Live editing. Shared text edits with teammates' cursors and selections.
  • Team activity. Explorer badges show which files teammates are viewing.
  • Working areas. See the function, method or class each teammate is working in. Shown by default; turn them off with Tether: Hide Collaborator Symbols or in Settings.
  • Comments. Discuss a line, reply, and resolve the thread when it's settled.
  • Shared files. Text and binary files, including new files, renames and deletions.
  • Access. Hosts invite Members to edit shared files or Observers to view them, and can change roles later.

About the project

Made by students,
for teams.

Tether is a student project for DECO3801 at The University of Queensland. It is not a university product or endorsed by the university. It is still under active development; keep your own backups of important work.

Help

Stuck on something?

Find help with sign-in, shared files, project access and recovering work in the support guide. If you still need a hand, ask a question on Tether's public Q&A page in the Visual Studio Marketplace.

When reporting a problem, run Tether: Show Logs from the Command Palette and describe what you were doing. Check the logs for anything private before sharing them.
